Just Leap In

Just moments after publishing the last post on Just Leap In I received my invite off them. I haven’t had to wait too long so sign up as soon as you can if you wanna try it out before it gets a little bit more popular and takes longer to receive an invite.

When you click the link in the email to activate your account you will go to the register page. It shouldn’t take anymore than 30 seconds to register and account. After you press the submit button you will be taken to another page asking you about things that you’re interested. You can skip this step.

August 18th 2008

We wrote about Yeigo yesterday and when we visited it today it looks like it has been hacked by a Turkish hacker. Hopefully Yeigo can solve this and tighten up their security so that this doesn’t happen again.

5 Useful Websites That You Probably Don’t Know About

April 10th 2008

There are a lot of useful websites out there that don’t get recognized so I’ve decided to make this list to identify some that many people might not know about.

1. Xurrency.com is a great website that can quickly convert a lot of currency. Xurrency uses Ajax so when the convert button is pressed the rates between the two selected currencies is very quickly shown without the page having to refresh.

Xurrency also have their own API so that you can access exchange information instantly from your own website easily. The currencies that you can see the exchange rates from and to are Euro, US Dollars, UK Pound, Argentine Peso, Australian Dollar, Brazillian Real, Bulgarian Lev, Canadian Dollar, Chinese Yuan, Colombian Peso, Croatian Kuna, Czech Koruna, Danish Krone, Estonian Kroon, Hong Kong Dollar, Hungarian Forint, Icelandic Krona, Indian Rupee, Japanese Yen, Korean Won, Latvia Lats, Lithuanian Litas, Malasian Ringgit, Mexican Peso, New Romanian Leu, New Turkish Lira, New Zealand Dollar, Norwegian Krone, Philippine Peso, Polish Zloty, Russian Rouble, Singapore Dollar, Slovak Koruna, South African Rand, Sri Lanka Rupee, Swedish Krona, Swiss Franc, Taiwan Dollar, Thai Baht and Venezuelan Bolivar. I think thats pretty much every currency in the world so what more could you ask for?

2. SocialScan.com is a website that lets you enter the URL of a website and then it checks the number of links that it has on well known social sites. SocialScan uses Ajax when searching for the links of the URL you entered among popular social sites so the results are returned quickly and your browser doesn’t have to refresh to another page.

The popular social sites that SocialScan searches are Delicious, Digg, Stumbleupon, Reddit, Myweb, Technorati, Shadows, Bloglines, Simpy, Blinklist, Diigo and Furl. So if you ever need to know how many links a certain website has on Digg or any of the other social websites that SocialScan supports within a click of a button then head over to SocialScan.

3. File Qube is a really nice and well designed file hosting website. As soon as the File Qube website has loaded up you can select a file and start to upload without having to sign up for a membership with the website. The maximum file size that you can upload is 75 MB per file. If you sign up though you get a 150MB limit but if you sign up for Pro Upload then you can upload files up to 500MB. You can also upload up to 5 files at a time with Basic, Advanced and Pro Download but with Pro Upload you can upload up to 10 files at once.

There are 4 account types - Basic, Advanced, Pro Download and Pro Upload. Basic is the account type for a non registered user. If you sign up to File Qube then you can get an Advanced account but if you pay $5/month then you get a Pro Download or a Pro Upload account.

With Basic and Advanced accounts you get a download limit of 100Kbps but with Pro Download and Pro Upload accounts you will get no limit so you can download files as fast as your internet connection is. If you have a Basic and Advanced account you will get a high level of advertising but if you have a Pro Download account then you will have a low level of advertising and if you have a Pro Upload account then you will have no ads at all.

The maximum file size that you can download with a Basic and Advanced account is 1Gb but with a Pro Download and Pro Upload there is no limit to the file size that you can download.

4. SWFUP is the fourth website that I think is useful and is not known by a wide audience. Have you ever needed to quickly throw an .swf file up on the internet to show a client or a friend what you have been working on in Flash? This is where SWFUP comes in handy because within a few seconds of loading up the site, your file can be on their servers within a click of a button. You don’t have to register to upload your files but if you want to you can.

When you make an account on SWFUP the files which you upload are simply added to your account so that they are all kept in one place and easy to find if you ever need to view them or send the link on to a friend. If you have an account on SWFUP you can also choose to keep the .swf files that you upload private so that no-one else can view them but you and whoever you choose. You can also upload mp3 files if you have an account on SWFUP.

When uploading a .swf you choose the file that you want to upload and enter your name then hit GO! and within seconds (depending on the size of your .swf file) your .swf file will be uploaded to their servers and ready to view by anyone. Once your file is uploaded you can get a code that will allow you to embed your file into a blog, website or Facebook.

5.
The last website that I am going to recommend is is.gd.If you need to send a long link to someone over email or an instant messenger sometimes characters in the link can break it up and make it unclickable meaning that the person you want to show the website to has to copy and paste the link into their browser. If you also find yourself tending to tell a lot of people about different articles but don’t know the direct link to the article then you can simply create a shortened URL on is.gd and tell them that link which will be very easy to remember and take no time to type into the browser. Is.gd will always try to make your link as short as possible so that it is easy to remember. So if you find yourself sending or telling people about a lot of long complicated links then head over to is.gd and shorten your URLs and make your life easier.

Thanks for reading my first article here at MUO. Post in the comments about which website you think is the most useful in the list and also post about websites that you think are useful which I haven’t covered.
